Tuning the Ear: Obedience to the Voice of the Shepherd

Lent is a time set apart not only to repent of sin, but to re-align our hearts, re-tune our ears, and return our obedience to the voice of God. Before we rush toward action, Lent invites us to slow down. Before we speak, Lent teaches us to listen. Before we follow, Lent asks us to discern who we are following.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people are consistently called back to this posture: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

In this season, we are reminded that obedience is not mechanical. It is relational. It flows from recognition. Sheep follow because they know the Shepherd’s voice.

As Bishop leads us through the words of Jesus in Matthew 25, we are invited to examine not only our actions, but our attentiveness. The “prepared” are not merely informed; they are formed. They have learned to recognize the Shepherd in the ordinary, to respond in love, and to obey even when obedience is costly.

This Lenten journey is designed to help us quiet competing voices, repent of misplaced allegiances, sharpen our spiritual discernment, follow the Shepherd with humility and faith, and prepare our hearts for Resurrection life.

Each week will offer a brief theological reflection. Each day will include Scripture, reflection questions, and a prayer prompt not to rush us through Lent, but to help us dwell in it.

May this season soften our hearts, steady our steps, and attune our ears to the voice that leads us to life.
